Huma grew up in Charlotte, where seeing her sister born at home inspired her lifelong love of birth, and Durham NC. She has considered Asheville home since attending UNC Asheville, where she majored in Environmental Science and Spanish with a minor in Biology. Her studies included internships in botany, midwifery, and medical interpreting, and after attending Doula training she served as a Doula through the BCHD’s volunteer doula program. She took time off to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, and still loves hiking and spending time outdoors. After graduating, Huma studied midwifery over six winters at Casa de Nacimiento in El Paso, while earning her living as a seasonal Fire Effects Monitor for the Park Service. She became a Certified Professional Midwife in 2010. While mostly staying home in Asheville with her two daughters, with the help of her supportive husband she apprenticed with local homebirth midwives, and then cared for an occasional midwifery client in TN where she was licensed. Huma joined Lilac as a birth assistant in 2023, and looks forward to continuing to support families through childbirth, and to hold space for transformatively beautiful births.
