Karen Severance is a Certified Nurse Midwife with nearly two decades of experience in women’s health. She began her nursing career in women’s surgical care in 2008, becoming a mother around the same time—an experience that shaped her deep respect for the strength and resilience of birthing people and families. She later worked in an OB/GYN office and spent 13 years as a Labor & Delivery nurse in Asheville supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Karen earned her Master of Science in Nursing in Nurse-Midwifery in 2025 and provides care across the lifespan, from adolescence through menopause. She is passionate about physiologic birth, trauma-informed care, and supporting birthing people in feeling informed, confident, and deeply supported throughout their pregnancy and birth journey. She feels honored to walk alongside families during one of life’s most meaningful and transformative experiences.
Karen lives in Asheville with her husband and two daughters, one of whom is in college, along with their playful one-year-old goldendoodle, Rue. Outside of the birth center, she enjoys cycling in the mountains, hiking to waterfalls, spending time outdoors with her family, cheering on the sidelines as a proud soccer mom, and cherishing time with her close friends. Before her career in nursing, she studied art and owned a burrito shop—where she often joked about becoming a midwife, inspired in part by a dream, long before that path became her life’s work.
